Lucknow Municipal Corporation Sets Record with Over Rs 650 Crore Property Tax Collection in FY24

Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) achieved a significant milestone in fiscal year 2023-24 by collecting property tax worth over Rs 650 crore, marking the highest revenue in its history. The remarkable achievement was driven by a substantial increase of over 26% in property and house tax collection, soaring from Rs 338 crore to Rs 425 crore compared to the previous fiscal year. Additionally, non-tax revenue from sources such as advertisement tax, rent, license, and food cart tax contributed around Rs 225 crore, culminating in a total revenue of Rs 650 crore for the civic body.

LMC commissioner, Inderjit Singh, credited this success to concerted efforts in increasing tax collection, particularly from commercial properties, including government buildings, educational institutions, businesses, and shops, alongside residential areas. Leveraging Geographic Information System (GIS) survey data, LMC identified previously untaxed properties and efficiently collected taxes from them, thereby expanding the tax base.

Despite these achievements, Singh acknowledged a gap in tax collection amounting to over Rs 100 crore, largely attributed to significant defaulters, including the railways, electricity department, Income Tax department, Awadh Shilp Gram, and the Central Registration Centre. Singh assured that efforts to bring all properties under the tax net without burdening the common man would continue, with major defaulters being urged to clear their dues.
