Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated 184 newly constructed Type-VII multi-storey flats for Members of Parliament at Baba Kharak Singh Marg, New Delhi. The new residential complex consists of four towers named Krishna, Godavari, Kosi, and Hooghly—after four great rivers of India, symbolizing the unity and vitality these rivers bring to millions of lives across the country.
During his address, PM Modi emphasized that the new complex would significantly enhance the ease of living for MPs in Delhi by increasing the availability of government housing. He congratulated the Members of Parliament and commended the dedication and hard work of the engineers and shramjeevis who contributed to the construction.
The Prime Minister shared that he had the opportunity to visit a sample flat in the complex and contrasted it with the older MP residences, which often suffered from neglect and deterioration. He noted that the new flats would free MPs from such housing challenges, enabling them to dedicate more time and energy to public service.
PM Modi acknowledged the difficulties first-time elected MPs face in securing accommodation in Delhi and stated that this project would help resolve those issues. Over 180 MPs will reside in these multi-storey buildings, which also bring a substantial economic benefit by reducing government expenditure on housing.
Drawing a parallel to the recently inaugurated Kartavya Bhavan, the Prime Minister pointed out that multiple ministries operated from rented premises, costing the government nearly ₹1,500 crore annually, which he described as a direct waste of public funds. Similarly, the shortage of MP housing added to government expenses. He noted that between 2004 and 2014, not a single new Lok Sabha MP residence was constructed. However, since 2014, the government has treated this housing shortage as a mission, with about 350 MP residences constructed to date, including the newly inaugurated flats. This initiative is now leading to significant public savings.
PM Modi highlighted India’s balanced approach to development and responsibility, recalling simultaneous initiatives such as the delivery of piped water to millions, the PM Awas Yojana facilitating homeownership for four crore poor families, the construction of a new Parliament building, and the establishment of hundreds of new medical colleges. He affirmed that these benefits are reaching all sections of society.
Expressing satisfaction with the sustainable features of the new MP housing complex, PM Modi stated that the initiative aligns with India’s pro-environment and future-safe approach. The complex includes solar-enabled infrastructure, reflecting India’s growing achievements in solar energy and sustainable development.
The Prime Minister appealed to MPs to foster the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ by living together harmoniously and encouraged collective celebrations of regional festivals within the complex to promote cultural vibrancy. He urged MPs to invite constituents to participate in these events and to learn and teach each other’s regional languages to enhance linguistic harmony.
He also stressed that sustainability and cleanliness should be core values of the complex, urging all residents to maintain not only their homes but the entire premises in a clean and hygienic condition. He proposed organizing Swachhata competitions between various MP residential complexes to encourage this effort.
Concluding his address, PM Modi expressed hope that MPs would work together as a team, setting a positive example for the nation. Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, Union Ministers, and Members of Parliament were present at the event among other dignitaries.
