Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the “Yellow Line” of the Bangalore Metro Rail, a key infrastructure addition aimed at easing traffic congestion across several high-density corridors connecting the city’s IT hub.

As part of the event, the Prime Minister travelled by metro from RV Road (Ragigudda) to the Electronic City metro station, interacting with students during the journey. The Yellow Line forms part of the Bangalore Metro Phase-2 project, covering a 19-kilometre stretch from RV Road to Bommasandra. Developed at an estimated cost of ₹7,160 crore, the corridor includes 16 stations.

According to officials, this addition expands Bengaluru’s operational metro network to over 96 kilometres, enhancing connectivity for commuters in areas such as Hosur Road, Silk Board Junction, and Electronics City Junction. The new line is expected to significantly reduce road congestion in these zones, which are among the most heavily trafficked in the city.

Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D K Shivakumar confirmed that three train sets have already been delivered for the Yellow Line, with a fourth expected later this month. Initially, trains will operate at 25-minute intervals, with plans to improve frequency to 10 minutes as additional rolling stock becomes available.

The inauguration drew large public participation, with people lining the route from KSR Bengaluru City Railway Station to Ragigudda station despite rainy weather. Supporters greeted the Prime Minister with slogans and flower petals, while Modi acknowledged them with a wave from his vehicle.

The ceremony was attended by Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister of State Shobha Karandlaje, and other senior officials.

The Yellow Line, when fully integrated with other metro corridors, is expected to improve access between residential areas, commercial hubs, and employment centres, particularly in the IT and electronics sectors. Planners anticipate that the reduced travel time and improved reliability will encourage greater adoption of public transport and contribute to easing the city’s chronic traffic issues.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has indicated that operational data from the first few months will be used to fine-tune schedules and service frequency. The launch aligns with the state’s broader urban transport goals, which include expanding metro coverage and integrating it with bus and suburban rail services.

With the Yellow Line now operational, the focus will shift to completing other sections under Phase-2 and progressing towards Phase-3, aimed at further expanding the metro’s reach across the Bengaluru metropolitan region.
