Rajkot Municipal Corporation Surpasses Rs 365 Crore in Property Tax Collection for FY24

In a notable achievement, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has collected Rs 365.49 crore as property tax during the financial year 2023-24. This amount reflects an increase of nearly Rs 40 crore compared to the previous fiscal year, marking a significant rise in tax income. Over the last five financial years, RMC has witnessed a remarkable growth of over 90% in tax collection, indicating a positive trend in revenue generation.

The increased tax collection can be attributed to various strategic initiatives undertaken by RMC, including leveraging technology for tax communication and payment. By adopting a WhatsApp-based system for tax communication, RMC ensured that tax bills reached taxpayers directly, enhancing efficiency and reducing communication barriers. As a result, the civic body received Rs 175 crore through online mode, indicating a shift towards digital payment channels.

Commissioner Aanand Patel attributed the success of the tax collection drive to aggressive efforts and proactive measures taken by RMC. Zone-wise teams were formed to engage with defaulters and encourage timely tax payments, leading to a higher compliance rate. Additionally, strict actions, such as sealing properties and disconnecting water connections, were taken against defaulters to enforce compliance.

Despite these achievements, RMC acknowledged the presence of significant defaulters, contributing to a gap in tax collection. To address this challenge, RMC intends to continue its efforts to bring all properties under the tax net and pursue defaulters to clear their dues. The success story of RMC serves as a testament to the effectiveness of technology-driven initiatives and proactive tax collection strategies in enhancing revenue generation for municipal corporations.

With a focus on leveraging technology, enhancing tax compliance, and enforcing accountability, RMC aims to sustain its revenue growth trajectory and contribute to the development and welfare of the city of Rajkot.
