Piyush Goyal Suggests New Township as India's Answer to Silicon Valley

In a visionary move that could reshape India’s startup ecosystem, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal proposed the creation of a new township dedicated entirely to startups and entrepreneurs. Speaking at the launch of the Bharat Startup Knowledge Access Registry (BHASKAR) portal, Goyal highlighted the potential for India to develop its own version of Silicon Valley, a hub where innovation and entrepreneurship could flourish in a self-contained ecosystem.

Vision for India’s Own Silicon Valley

Mr. Goyal’s suggestion for a township mirrors the global success of Silicon Valley in the United States, which has become synonymous with technological innovation and startup culture. While Bengaluru is already considered the Silicon Valley of India, he urged the country to think beyond its current capabilities and aim for a larger, more structured ecosystem that can accommodate a growing number of entrepreneurs, innovators, and disruptors. His proposal involves collaboration with the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC), which is implementing the National Industrial Corridor Programme to develop new industrial cities across the country.

He emphasized the need for India to aim higher and create its own version of Silicon Valley, a township dedicated to entrepreneurs, startups, innovators, and disruptors. He envisions a space where individuals with ideas, irrespective of their location, can collaborate and thrive in a dynamic innovation ecosystem.

Role of NICDC in Creating the Township

The National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) plays a pivotal role in developing industrial infrastructure across India. Goyal's idea of leveraging NICDC's expertise aligns with the government’s larger goal of fostering industrial growth and attracting foreign and domestic investments. The envisioned township would be built on a large land area—potentially 100 to 500 acres—dedicated entirely to startups, incubators, and accelerators, creating an ideal environment for entrepreneurs to thrive.
