Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel Inaugurates ₹550 Crore Atal Smart City in Rajkot

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel recently inaugurated the ₹550 crore Atal Smart City project in Rajkot, marking a major achievement under the Smart Cities Mission. Located in Town Planning (TP) Scheme Number 32 in Raiya, this urban transformation project covers 930 acres of land. The development is designed to accommodate around four lakh people, promising a sustainable and technologically advanced urban living environment.

Key Features of Atal Smart City

Integrated Road Network and Smart Transportation

  • The development includes 18.21 km of smart roads, designed to serve as an example for future urban road systems. The area features a 14 km cycle track alongside wide roads with footpaths for pedestrians. Additionally, an 8.51 km Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor, equipped with 15 modern bus stops, ensures smooth public transportation.

Utility Infrastructure

  • The city incorporates special RCC ducts for 66KV power cables and optical fiber networks, eliminating future disruptions to roads for maintenance. This feature ensures the city remains well-connected without the need for excavation in the future.

Stormwater Drainage and Rainwater Conservation

  • The city has been designed with an innovative stormwater drainage system, focusing on effective rainwater conservation. The system channels rainwater to Atal Sarovar, supporting the city’s sustainable water management strategy.

Water Supply Systems

  • Atal Smart City is equipped with dual water lines—one for potable water and another for recycled water. The recycled water is sourced from a 56 MLD sewage treatment plant and treated further through a tertiary treatment plant. This dual system is projected to save up to 30% of potable water usage.

Recreational and Green Spaces

  • The project includes reserved spaces for gardening, with 26 plots dedicated to green spaces. The area surrounding Raiya Lake features cycling tracks, jogging paths, and other recreational amenities for residents to enjoy.

Residential and Commercial Infrastructure

There is private land around the smart city and a total of 50 plots have been allocated for various purposes: 4 for residential use, 6 for commercial establishments, and 7 for social infrastructure, while 26 plots are earmarked for gardening and greenery.

Project Timeline

The development of Atal Smart City began on August 23, 2019, and was completed on November 19, 2024. The project has been designed to be fully equipped with modern amenities, aiming to provide a sustainable and high-quality living experience to its residents.

The Atal Smart City in Rajkot, part of Gujarat’s broader Smart Cities Mission initiative, stands as a prime example of how urban areas can blend technology, sustainability, and efficiency to create a better future for citizens. The project is expected to set a benchmark for smart city development across India.
