Google Expands Its Footprint in India By Leasing 6,49,000 Sq Ft office space in Bengaluru
Google is taking a significant step in expanding its presence in India by leasing a massive 649,000-square-feet office space in Alembic City, Whitefield, Bengaluru. The tech giant will pay a monthly rent of Rs 4,02,38,000, which breaks down to Rs 62 per square feet. This lease agreement includes a lock-in period of three years, underscoring Google’s commitment to maintaining its operations in this new location for at least that duration.
This expansion follows recent strategic changes in Google’s workforce. Earlier this month, Google announced the layoff of several key employees from its US offices, with some positions being relocated to India. This move is part of Google’s broader strategy to bolster its presence in the Indian market, leveraging the country's growing tech talent pool and favorable business environment.
In addition to the new office in Bengaluru, Google renewed its lease for 600,000 square feet of office space in Hyderabad in 2022 under its subsidiary, Google Connect Services India Pvt. Ltd. The company has also agreed to lease 1.3 million square feet of office space from Bagmane Developers in Bengaluru, further solidifying its expansion plans in the region.
As of 2020, Google’s office space portfolio in India had grown to 3.5 million square feet. Currently, Google operates in five cities across India, with a total real estate footprint reaching 9.3 million square feet. This substantial increase in office space is a clear indication of Google’s long-term commitment to the Indian market.
In addition to expanding office spaces, Google has also announced plans to manufacture Pixel smartphones in India. Production will take place at a Foxconn facility in Tamil Nadu, starting with the Pixel 8 model. This initiative was first revealed at the Google for India conference last year and aligns with India’s push for local production. Furthermore, Google aims to start drone production in Tamil Nadu, showcasing its efforts to diversify its manufacturing operations within the country.
These strategic moves by Google highlight the company’s dedication to increasing its operational footprint in India. The local manufacturing of Pixel smartphones and drones not only supports India's Make in India initiative but also demonstrates Google's commitment to long-term investment in the region.
