Va Tech Wabag Secures ₹700 Crore Order for Advanced Wastewater Treatment Project in Zambia
Indian multinational water technology group Va Tech Wabag (Wabag) has announced a significant achievement in its global operations. The company has secured a ₹700 crore contract from the Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) in Zambia for the design, construction, and operation of advanced wastewater treatment plants. The project, supported by multilateral funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Germany's Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), marks a major milestone in Wabag’s efforts to expand its presence in Africa and enhance its reputation as a comprehensive water solutions provider.
This project is part of a Design-Build-Operate (DBO) contract, under which Wabag will take charge of the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of two advanced wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Zambia. The facilities, with capacities of 54 million liters per day (MLD) in Ngwerere and 19 MLD in Chunga, are expected to play a pivotal role in improving the region's wastewater management infrastructure.
The EPC phase of the project is expected to span 36 months, followed by a 24-month period for operations and maintenance (O&M) to ensure the long-term efficiency and performance of the facilities. A standout feature of this initiative is the integration of renewable energy solutions, with most of the WWTPs' energy requirements set to be sustainably met through a combination of solar power and biogas generation.
The successful execution of this project will contribute significantly to Zambia's mission to improve water and sanitation infrastructure. By addressing challenges related to wastewater management, these advanced facilities aim to positively impact countless lives in Lusaka and its surrounding areas.
For Wabag, this order reinforces its strategic position as a leader in water technology solutions across Africa. The company’s efforts align with the broader goals of sustainable development in the region. Speaking about the project, Guhan Kandasamy, Head of Sales & Marketing (Africa) at Wabag, expressed gratitude towards LWSC for their confidence in the company. He highlighted the importance of this initiative in enhancing sanitation infrastructure in Zambia, describing it as one of the most advanced sanitation projects in the country’s recent history.
The project’s funding from the EIB and KfW underscores the importance of global collaboration in addressing critical infrastructure needs in developing regions. Both organizations are known for their commitment to funding initiatives that promote sustainable and inclusive development. This partnership not only facilitates the technical implementation of the project but also emphasizes the role of international cooperation in achieving long-term developmental goals.
