Municipal Corporation of Delhi Conducts Survey of Dangerous Buildings Ahead of Monsoon

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated a comprehensive survey to identify potentially hazardous buildings in the national capital in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season. With just two months remaining until the onset of monsoon rains, MCD aims to complete this survey by the end of June, ensuring the safety of residents and structures across Delhi. 

According to MCD officials, the survey encompasses all types of localities, including approved colonies, unauthorized colonies, and villages. The primary objective is to assess the structural integrity of buildings and identify any that may pose a risk to occupants or surrounding areas during the monsoon season, which typically arrives in July. 

As part of the survey, over 86,000 houses have already been inspected by MCD officials, with none found to be in dangerous conditions thus far. However, if any building is identified as dilapidated or structurally compromised, MCD will promptly issue notices to the owners for necessary repairs and undertake further actions to mitigate risks. 

The survey covers all 12 zones across Delhi, encompassing an estimated 35 lakh buildings. In addition to residential structures, MCD has also issued guidelines for the inspection of government offices, dispensaries, hospitals, and municipal schools

to ensure their readiness for the rainy season. Priority repairs will be carried out on any identified deficiencies to enhance structural stability and safety. 

During the survey, field staff meticulously inspect buildings based on visual assessments and structural examinations. Any buildings deemed unsafe or in need of repairs will be addressed promptly to prevent any untoward incidents during the monsoon months. The entire survey process is slated for completion by the end of June 2024, well in advance of the onset of monsoon rains. 

In 2023, MCD's building and maintenance department inspected over 30.54 lakh houses, identifying 292 structures in need of repairs and issuing notices accordingly. Eight buildings were deemed to be in dangerous condition, prompting immediate action to either repair or evacuate the affected structures. 

Overall, the proactive measures undertaken by MCD underscore the importance of ensuring structural safety and preparedness ahead of the monsoon season. By identifying and addressing potential hazards in advance, MCD aims to safeguard the well-being of residents and minimize risks associated with inclement weather conditions.
