India’s First Bullet Train to Operate at 320 kmph: Progress and Key Developments

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, India’s first high-speed rail corridor, is progressing with significant construction milestones. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the status of the project and the redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station. He confirmed that the bullet train will operate at a maximum speed of 350 kmph, with regular operations planned at 320 kmph. 

The redevelopment of Ahmedabad Railway Station, awarded in November 2023, is expected to be completed by June 2027. The project aims to integrate heritage structures with modern infrastructure. The new station will function as a Multimodal Transport Hub (MMTH), connecting the railway network with the bullet train, metro, and bus rapid transport system.

Key features of the station redevelopment include:

• A 15-acre concourse plaza and a seven-acre mezzanine plaza over railway tracks.
• A waiting area with essential amenities such as toilets, drinking water, food courts, and baby feeding rooms.
• A dedicated elevated road network to improve accessibility and decongest the station.
• Architectural inspiration from the Modhera Sun Temple to reflect Ahmedabad’s cultural heritage.

Progress on Bullet Train Infrastructure

Construction on around 360 km of the 508-km-long high-speed corridor has been completed. The route will include 12 stations between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, facilitating faster travel between the two cities.

Mr. Vaishnaw also inspected the 200-meter-long steel bridge being constructed over National Highway 48 near Nadiad. The bridge, comprising two spans of 100 meters each, is fabricated with steel sourced from Indian manufacturers, including TATA, JSW, and SAIL. The fabrication work was completed at the Salasar plant in Hapur. This aspect of the project aligns with the Make in India initiative and highlights self-reliance in infrastructure development.

Anand-Nadiad Bullet Train Station

Significant progress has been made at the Anand-Nadiad high-speed railway station, with nearly 70% of the work completed. Vaishnaw emphasized the urgency in completing the remaining construction, ensuring timely execution of the project.

Expected Timeline

Although no specific operational deadline was announced, the minister stated that work is progressing swiftly, with efforts directed toward starting operations at the earliest possible date. The bullet train is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, enhancing connectivity and infrastructure in the region.

Additional Features of the Project

The high-speed corridor is designed with safety and efficiency in mind. The project incorporates seismic resilience to withstand potential earthquakes. Advanced signaling and communication systems will be used to regulate train movement and ensure operational safety. Dedicated maintenance depots are being planned for regular upkeep of rolling stock and infrastructure.

The stations along the corridor will include passenger amenities such as waiting lounges, parking spaces, and digital information boards. The integration with other transport networks will improve accessibility for passengers commuting between different cities.
