Union Minister Nitin Gadkari Allocates ₹55,000 Crore for Assam’s Infrastructure Projects

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹55,000 crores would be initiated in Assam in the coming years. These projects aim to enhance connectivity and support economic growth in the region.

While addressing the Advantage Assam 2.0 Infrastructure and Investment Summit in Guwahati through a virtual session, Gadkari provided details of the planned developments. The major projects include the construction of the Guwahati Ring Road at a cost of ₹5,800 crores and a four-lane road from Guwahati to Panchgram via Barapani, valued at ₹25,000 crores.

Additional infrastructure initiatives include an elevated corridor at Kaziranga National Park, estimated to cost ₹6,000 crores. A 12-km underwater tunnel between Gohpur and Numaligarh, budgeted at ₹15,000 crores, is also in the pipeline. Further, a new road project valued at ₹3,225 crores is planned to improve connectivity between Jagiroad in Assam and Bhutan via Bhairabkunda.

Gadkari also highlighted ongoing projects in Assam, stating that work on projects worth approximately ₹60,000 crores is already underway. He emphasized that between 2014 and 2029, his ministry expects to complete projects in the state amounting to nearly ₹3 lakh crores.

During the summit, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal spoke about Assam's strategic location and the significance of waterway transport for trade and connectivity with ASEAN nations. Sonowal announced that his ministry would allocate ₹4,800 crores over the next five years to support the state's water transport infrastructure.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, while speaking at the valedictory session, praised the structured approach of the summit. He noted that, unlike other investment summits where proposals are broadly announced, in Assam, all proposals for Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were pre-screened to ensure feasibility before approval.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared on social media that the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit 2025 concluded with investment commitments totaling ₹491,500 crores. Sarma stated that the government had exercised caution in selecting MoUs that were practical and had a strong likelihood of materializing. While the summit received proposals worth over ₹6 lakh crores, only ₹2.5 lakh crores worth of MoUs were signed.

During the inaugural session of the summit, several leading conglomerates announced significant investments in Assam across various sectors. Among these, Reliance Industries Limited, Adani Group, and Vedanta Resources Limited each committed ₹50,000 crores in investments.

The summit emphasized Assam’s potential as an investment destination and the role of infrastructure development in driving economic growth. The commitments made by the central and state governments, along with private sector participation, are expected to enhance the state's connectivity, attract industries, and enhance trade opportunities in the years ahead.
