MahaRERA Reports 50,000+ Registered Real Estate Agents; Mumbai, Pune, Thane Leads

Since its establishment eight years ago, the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has registered more than 50,000 real estate agents, marking a significant milestone in the regulation and formalisation of the real estate sector in the state. Among these, Mumbai stands out as the city with the highest number of registered agents, followed by Pune and Thane, indicating the concentrated activity in these key urban centres.

MahaRERA’s data reveals that as of May 2025, a total of 50,673 real estate agents have been registered across Maharashtra since the regulatory body began operations. Of this number, 31,980 agents maintain active registrations, while the registrations of 18,693 agents have been cancelled for various reasons, including failure to comply with mandatory requirements.

Mumbai leads the state with over 11,800 registered agents, making it the primary hub for real estate activities. Pune follows with more than 8,200 agents registered in the region, including over 7,000 within Pune city itself. Thane ranks third, with over 6,700 agents registered, and the Nagpur region has over 1,500 registered agents. Other cities such as Nashik and Sambhaji Nagar also have registered agents, with 324 and 343 respectively.

Inclusion of Agents from Outside Maharashtra

MahaRERA has also opened registration to agents based outside Maharashtra, allowing them to operate in the state’s real estate market legally. According to the regulator, agents from as many as 150 cities outside Maharashtra are registered, including from major real estate markets such as New Delhi, Gurugram, Prayagraj, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Goa, Ahmedabad, Patna, and Jammu. This expansion reflects Maharashtra’s appeal as a major real estate market and its openness to agents from across India.

The regulatory framework in Maharashtra has evolved to improve professionalism and accountability within the real estate agent community. In January 2023, MahaRERA made it mandatory for agents to undergo training and obtain the prescribed certificate of registration, aiming to raise standards in the industry.

Additionally, in February 2023, MahaRERA mandated that registered agents appear for a competency examination. Agents are also required to submit half-yearly progress reports publicly, detailing the projects they represent and the sales handled on behalf of developers. This move aims to improve transparency and allow buyers to make more informed decisions.

These regulations have had significant effects on the agent community. In May 2024, MahaRERA suspended the registrations of over 20,000 agents who failed to meet the training and certification requirements. This action underlines the authority’s commitment to maintaining standards and ensuring that agents operating in the market are qualified and accountable.

Project Registrations Also Cross 50,000 Mark

In addition to agents, MahaRERA has also reached a milestone of registering over 50,000 real estate projects across Maharashtra. This makes MahaRERA the only real estate regulatory authority in India to have crossed this threshold.

Nearly half of these registered projects are located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune, which are the most active real estate markets in the state. Tamil Nadu ranks second nationwide in project registrations, with 27,609 projects, followed by Gujarat with 15,322 residential projects.

The registration and regulation of agents and projects through MahaRERA have contributed to improving the transparency, professionalism, and accountability in Maharashtra’s real estate market. By formalising the agent community and regulating projects, the authority has aimed to protect the interests of homebuyers and investors, while also fostering confidence in the market.

Mumbai, Pune, and Thane, as the leading regions for agent registrations, continue to be the focal points for real estate activities. These cities attract significant development and buyer interest, supported by the increasing number of registered and trained agents who can provide professional services.

The inclusion of agents from outside Maharashtra reflects the growing interconnectivity of India’s real estate markets and Maharashtra’s prominence as a preferred destination for real estate investment and development.
