Foxconn Completes $230 Million On-Site Dormitories for Chennai Workers

Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer and a major supplier for Apple, has completed a $230 million dormitory project in Tamil Nadu, India. This development is aimed at addressing the housing needs of the company’s workforce in Chennai, which includes over 41,000 employees, most of whom are women. The new facility, located within Foxconn’s premises in Sriperumbudur, eliminates the need for workers to commute and provides them with housing close to their workplace.

The dormitory complex spans 20 acres and consists of six 10-storey residential blocks and two utility blocks. It can accommodate up to 18,000 workers. By constructing the dormitories on-site, Foxconn aims to provide its workforce with greater convenience and reduce travel time, which was previously a challenge for many employees. The proximity to the workplace will allow workers to walk to their dormitories instead of relying on buses for transportation.

In addition to the residential units, the complex includes essential facilities to meet the daily needs of its workers. A canteen has been set up to offer meals at subsidized rates, ensuring that employees have access to affordable food. A small grocery store is also available within the complex, providing workers with a convenient option to purchase everyday essentials.

The complex also includes sports and recreational facilities. Workers can access spaces for cricket, badminton, basketball, and volleyball, encouraging them to engage in physical activities during their free time. These facilities aim to provide workers with opportunities to relax and recharge after their shifts, contributing to a more balanced work environment.

This dormitory project marks Foxconn’s first investment in housing for workers in India. It reflects the company’s effort to support its workforce and address challenges such as commuting and housing shortages. In addition to Foxconn’s initiative, the Tamil Nadu government has supported efforts to enhance worker housing in the region. Earlier this year, the state inaugurated an industrial housing project in Vallam Vadagal near Sriperumbudur. This government project, built at a cost of ₹706 crore, is designed to house 18,720 women employees of Foxconn. Together, these projects represent a combined effort to improve living conditions for workers and support the region’s industrial growth.

The dormitory project also aligns with Foxconn’s broader strategy of expanding its operations in India. As global companies seek to diversify their supply chains, India has emerged as a key location for manufacturing investments.
