Rajasthan is poised to overtake Andhra Pradesh as the country’s largest cement-producing state, with Jaisalmer emerging as a key production hub. Six new cement plants are planned in the desert district between 2026 and 2029, backed by proposed investments exceeding Rs. 17,000 crore. Together, these plants are expected to add nearly 16 million tonnes of cement production capacity to the state.
Currently, Andhra Pradesh leads India in cement production with an installed capacity of 62.5 million tonnes, while Rajasthan follows closely with 55 million tonnes. Once the Jaisalmer plants become operational, Rajasthan is projected to surpass Andhra Pradesh, establishing itself as the nation’s top cement producer. Nagaur, where a couple of new plants are already under construction, will further strengthen the state’s output. Presently, Chittorgarh remains Rajasthan’s leading cement-producing district, housing major plants operated by established manufacturers.
According to a senior official of the Bureau of Investment Promotion, the upcoming plants are not merely proposals or MoUs. “The companies behind these new Jaisalmer plants are leading players in the country’s cement industry and have already secured limestone mining leases. It is only a matter of time before these plants become operational,” the official added.
Historically, Jaisalmer’s economy has relied heavily on tourism. Over the past fifteen years, the district has seen significant investments in solar and wind energy projects, diversifying its industrial base. The entry of cement manufacturing now adds a new dimension to Jaisalmer’s economy, combining industrial activity with its existing energy and tourism sectors.
Rajasthan’s limestone reserves, estimated at about 2.5 billion tonnes, constitute roughly 26% of India’s total proven deposits. This abundant resource, coupled with proximity to major northern and western markets and a robust transport network, makes Jaisalmer an ideal location for cement production. Industry experts say the region’s connectivity and resource availability will reduce logistics costs and ensure efficient production and distribution.
The state government’s focus on industrial development is evident through the facilitation of permits, mining leases, and infrastructure support for these projects. The cement industry is expected to generate employment opportunities, attract ancillary industries, and contribute significantly to Rajasthan’s GDP growth.
With these developments, Rajasthan is positioning itself as a major player in India’s cement sector, complementing its ongoing efforts in renewable energy and tourism. The strategic expansion into industrial production highlights the state’s broader economic ambitions and readiness to leverage natural resources for sustainable growth.
