Populous, a global architecture firm, has announced a major redevelopment plan for Eden Gardens in Kolkata, a city often considered as the spiritual home of Indian cricket. With a history of 1864, the stadium is not only one of the oldest in the world but also is among the largest ones, and holds very high cultural and sporting significance.

A Legacy Venue Reimagined
Rather than demolishing the existing building, the design plan revolves around upgrading and refurbishing it. Such a sensitive treatment means that the emotional appeal and historical character of Eden Gardens are preserved, at the same time, modern elements are brought in to raise the levels of the players' as well as the spectators' enjoyment. This initiative is in line with the increasing worldwide trend of stadium architecture - saving the old while upgrading the venues to the new changing standards and needs.
The major highlight of the presented plans is a powerful "fan-first" approach. All changes first and foremost focus on how the visitors reconnect with the venue, going from the fitting of the seats to opening and accessibility of the areas. Besides, the upgrade also leads to the increase of the stadium's functionality which can even serve as a venue for other activities apart from the match days.

Expansion of Capacity and Comfort
One important element of the renovation is an increase in capacity and comfort. The number of seats at the stadium will be increased from 68,000 to about 85,000, all while paying attention to enhanced sightlines and easier traffic flow. In addition, there is a focus on premium services in line with the increasing trend in sports hospitality services.
- Important changes are:
- Additional seating capacity of 17,000 spectators
- 30% increase in corporate hospitality seating via premium boxes and lounges
The Sky Deck and Fan Zones
Among the many highlights that the stadium boasts, the Sky Deck comes topmost. It offers an elevated deck from which to view the entire urban and natural landscape around. This facility will serve multiple purposes as it will remain operational not just during the games but throughout the year, making it one of the distinctive features of the stadium.
The redesigning at the ground level includes creating fan zones, landscaping, and creating social areas. These have ensured that the stadium opens up to its surroundings instead of remaining an enclosed sports venue.

A Stadium for the Future
The development project also includes the addition of a layer of culture and digital technology to future-proof the stadium. People visiting the stadium will be able to get engaged with the evolution of cricket through spaces and technology.
Some of the new experiences will include:
- The museum of cricket and hall of fame
- Digital experience zones
- Flexible event spaces outside of cricket
- Public spaces linked with gardens
Sourav Ganguly, President of the Cricket Association of Bengal, expressed his vision of transforming Eden Gardens into one of the world’s finest cricket venues, emphasizing not just capacity but also enhanced quality, comfort, and overall spectator experience. Reflecting on his personal connection, he noted that having grown up playing at the iconic stadium and experiencing its electrifying crowds, being involved in its redevelopment holds deep emotional significance and feels like a way of giving back to a place that shaped his career.

Sustainability and Global Vision
Sustainability and safety have also been considered integral elements in the construction. The new infrastructure will allow for better crowd management as well as environmentally friendly processes that will make the stadium compatible with world-class standards. These measures will ensure Eden Gardens is sustainable in the future.
Eden Gardens Stadium is among the sports facilities that are part of Populous’s global portfolio. This facility will serve as an extension of Populous’s mission of designing sports facilities. Re-envisioning Eden Gardens is part of a bigger story of creating the stadium of the future, one that goes beyond being a mere venue to becoming a destination.
The redevelopment can be viewed as blending the old with the new. The project not only preserves the significance of the stadium but also equips it for the coming generations of the cricket game. The transformed Eden Gardens is expected to provide an exhilarating experience of the contemporary game for the people of Kolkata and cricket lovers from all over the country.
