The Gujarat government has approved a budget of Rs 2,609 crore for the resurfacing and related works of roads managed by Panchayats across the state, aiming to enhance the rural road network and ensure all-weather connectivity.
Under this initiative, a total of 1,258 roads covering 4,196 km will be upgraded. The northern region of Gujarat will see improvements on 487 roads spanning 1,609 km, while the southern region will have 499 roads covering 1,528 km enhanced. Additionally, Saurashtra will have 272 roads upgraded, covering 1,059 km.
Officials stated that the initiative responds to requests from local representatives and rural communities advocating for durable roads that can withstand seasonal challenges. By reinforcing rural connectivity, the government intends to facilitate movement within villages, improve access to nearby towns and cities, and bolster economic activity.
The road upgrades are expected to improve mobility for residents, promote trade, and support socio-economic growth in Gujarat’s rural areas. Enhanced rural infrastructure will not only benefit local communities by providing smoother and safer travel but also encourage investments and development in remote regions.
According to officials, these upgrades will include resurfacing, repairs, and improvements to ensure roads remain functional throughout the year. The plan focuses on quality construction, long-term durability, and reducing travel disruptions, which are critical for both residents and businesses operating in rural areas.
The government highlighted that strengthening rural roads is a key measure in supporting inclusive growth, connecting remote villages to main highways, and improving access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and markets. The upgraded roads are expected to enhance economic prospects, particularly for agricultural producers, small businesses, and local traders who rely on dependable transport networks.
This large-scale initiative reflects the Gujarat government’s commitment to infrastructure-led rural development, recognizing the strategic importance of well-maintained roads in fostering growth and improving the quality of life for citizens.
By investing in rural road networks, Gujarat is taking a proactive step to modernize transportation infrastructure, ensuring that villages are better connected to urban centers. Officials also emphasized that such measures are aligned with long-term plans to strengthen regional logistics, reduce travel time, and provide safer and more efficient routes for residents and commercial transport.
