NTPC Showcases Fly Ash-Based Eco-House ‘Sukh’ at IITF 2024 for ₹1.5 Lakh: Advancing Eco-Friendly Housing Solutions
NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, has introduced its eco-friendly and affordable housing solution, the ‘Sukh’ Eco-House, at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2024 held at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. This initiative addresses the dual challenge of rural housing needs and the reuse of industrial byproducts, particularly fly ash.
The ‘Sukh’ Eco-House is constructed using approximately 80% fly ash and ash-based products sourced from NTPC’s thermal power plants. By utilizing these materials, the housing model demonstrates a practical approach to reducing industrial waste and minimizing reliance on traditional resources. The design eliminates the need for sand, cement, steel, and mortar by using interlocking wall blocks made entirely from ash. This reduces both material costs and construction time while offering an alternative to conventional methods.
Each eco-house spans 30 square meters and includes a drawing room, bedroom, kitchen, and toilet. It can be built at a cost of ₹1,50,000 within 15-20 days. All parts of the structure, including the foundation, roof, and door and window frames, are made from ash-based materials. This method reduces the use of natural aggregates, helping to conserve resources and prevent topsoil erosion. The construction process achieves a significant reduction in carbon emissions, with the houses producing 75% less emissions compared to standard methods.
The eco-houses have been tested for durability and have withstood varied weather conditions, including rain, storms, and strong winds, over two years. Their modular design allows them to be dismantled and reassembled with minimal damage, which adds to their flexibility and potential for reuse.
The eco-houses align with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), providing a scalable and eco-friendly model for affordable rural housing. By addressing waste management and promoting the reuse of industrial byproducts, NTPC’s initiative paves the way for sustainable construction practices. Besides these eco-houses can also be powered by solar energy, thereby strengthening India’s Net Zero commitments.
This initiative represents a step toward efficient resource use and the promotion of alternative construction methods that benefit communities while reducing environmental harm.
