State-owned NTPC Ltd announced the commercial operation of a 38-MW solar power unit under its step-down subsidiary in Gujarat, marking its renewable energy expansion. This unit is part of the 300-MW Khavda Solar Energy Project, developed by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL), a step-down subsidiary of NTPC through NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL).
According to NTPC, “The fourth part capacity of 37.95 MW out of 300 MW Khavda Solar Energy Project under the 450 MW Hybrid Tranche V Project in Gujarat has been declared commercially operational on October 19.” Earlier phases of the project included 142.2 MW commissioned on June 28, 32.8 MW on June 30, and 49.125 MW on August 22, bringing the total operational capacity of Khavda to 262.07 MW.
With the addition of this new unit, the total installed capacity of NTPC Green Energy Limited group has increased to 7,553.675 MW, up from 7,515.72 MW previously. The company highlighted that this incremental capacity reinforces its strategy of diversifying energy sources and strengthening its renewable energy portfolio.
An NTPC spokesperson said, “Our phased commissioning approach allows us to integrate large-scale solar projects efficiently while contributing to India’s renewable energy targets. The Khavda project is a testament to NTPC’s commitment to clean energy growth and sustainable power generation.”
Analysts note that NTPC’s methodical expansion in solar capacity aligns with its broader objectives of maintaining a balanced energy mix while supporting India’s national goals for green power adoption. The Khavda project, being part of the 450 MW Hybrid Tranche V initiative, underscores the company’s focus on combining thermal, hydro, and renewable capacities to meet increasing energy demands across the country.
“The addition of this solar unit highlights NTPC’s role in accelerating India’s clean energy transition while maintaining operational and grid efficiency,” the NTPC spokesperson added.
