Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to inaugurate twin apartment complexes in Thuruthy, West Kochi, on September 27. The projects aim to rehabilitate 394 families under the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY), a central scheme targeting slum-free urban development. One of the two towers has been constructed by the Kochi Corporation, while the second was developed by Cochin Smart Mission Limited (CSML).

The first tower, built by the Corporation, is an 11-storey structure with a total built-up area of 10,796.42 square meters and an investment of ₹41.74 crore. It comprises 199 residential units of 300 square feet each, with each unit including a dining-cum-living area, bedroom, kitchen, balcony, and two toilets. The complex also provides 81 parking slots, a sewage treatment plant with a 105 KLD capacity, three elevators, and staircases. Common areas are provided on the first and 11th floors, measuring 150 square meters and 800 square meters, respectively. An anganwadi and 14 commercial shops have been incorporated into the ground floor to serve community needs.

The second tower, developed by CSML, is built around a central courtyard and spans 13 floors with 195 units, each 350 square feet. Each floor accommodates 15 units, while the ground floor provides 18 shops along with parking for 68 cars and 17 two-wheelers. The total built-up area is 10,221 square meters, and the building is equipped with three lifts and staircases. Solar panels have been installed on the rooftop to supply energy for common areas, reflecting a focus on sustainable infrastructure.

Mayor M. Anilkumar emphasized that the project fulfills the administration’s commitment to providing secure and dignified housing to beneficiary families. The twin complexes incorporate infrastructure such as sewage treatment, parking, lifts, and commercial facilities, designed to meet both residential and community requirements.

This development follows a previous relocation initiative, where 77 families from the P&T Colony were moved to an apartment complex in Mundamveli built by the Greater Cochin Development Authority. Residents of that complex had raised concerns regarding leakage and structural safety, prompting engagement of IIT Madras for consultancy on building integrity.

The Thuruthy twin housing project is expected to improve living conditions for 394 families by providing access to modern amenities while addressing urban housing shortages. Both towers represent a coordinated effort between the Corporation and CSML to deliver large-scale housing in line with national slum-free objectives.
