The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has extended the last date to avail the 5% rebate on property tax payment till July 31, 2024. According to a circular issued by BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath, residents were earlier eligible to receive the rebate if they paid the property taxes for fiscal 2024-25 by April 30, 2024. The deadline has been extended by three more months. Under Section 144 (8) of the BBMP Act 2020, the civic body can give a 5% rebate to property owners who make the payments at the beginning of a financial year.
As the 2024 Lok Sabha election is expected to be announced, the Revenue Department officials and its staff will be completely involved in poll-related works. Due to this, it will be difficult to process the payments during the period, the circular read as mentioned in the report.
According to the circular, there are several public holidays in April, and taxpayers will not be able to pay them at select bank branches. Considering all these factors, for the convenience of taxpayers and to ensure property tax collection, the 5% rebate period for taxpayers is extended from 01-05-2024 to 31-07-2024.
The BBMP has also launched a new scheme where property owners can pay their property tax even before obtaining the khata certificate. The scheme will be rolled out on March 20, officials said.
