Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport at Jewar. This marks a giant leap for India's aviation and infrastructure. The second international airport in the Delhi-NCR region after IGI, it will enhance regional connectivity, accelerate economic development, and help alleviate traffic congestion in New Delhi.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Governor Anandiben Patel, and union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu were the main dignitaries at the function. Many locals turned up in large numbers, reflecting the significance of the project to the area. One could say this is the first move towards a major change in the pattern of air transportation. It is hard to imagine that regional demand will not increase with the availability of this new facility.
A Transformational Infrastructure Project
Describing the airport as a symbol of Uttar Pradesh’s growth story, Prime Minister Modi highlighted its long-term impact on development and connectivity. “The inauguration of Phase-I of Noida International Airport marks a major step in Uttar Pradesh’s growth story and India’s aviation future,” he said.
The airport is strategically located to serve key cities such as Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Agra, and Mathura. It is also expected to act as a major gateway for tourists and pilgrims visiting northern India.
PM Modi emphasized the scale of operations the airport will eventually handle, stating, “Noida International Airport will connect north India to the entire world and it will become an airport from where a flight will take off every two minutes.”
Boost to Economy and Employment
The Prime Minister underlined the economic opportunities the airport will generate, particularly for farmers, small businesses, and youth in western Uttar Pradesh. “This entire region is going to benefit greatly. This airport is going to bring many new opportunities for the farmers, small and medium-sized businesses and the youth of West UP,” he said.
He further added, “Noida International Airport will create new opportunities for farmers, small traders and youngsters of Western Uttar Pradesh.”
The project is expected to spur development across multiple sectors, including logistics, hospitality, real estate, and manufacturing, turning the region into a major economic hub.
Relief for Delhi’s IGI Airport
Located over 90 km from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Jewar airport is expected to reduce the heavy passenger load currently handled by IGI. With increasing air traffic demand in the NCR, the new airport will play a crucial role in distributing passenger and cargo operations more efficiently.
Additionally, the airport is being developed as a multi-modal transport hub, integrating road, rail, and metro connectivity for seamless passenger movement.
According to project timelines, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued the aerodrome licence for the airport on March 6, 2026. Following this approval, cargo and domestic flight operations are expected to begin within 45 days.
This indicates that commercial flight services may commence between mid-April and May 2026, although final schedules are yet to be officially announced.
Government’s Infrastructure Push
Highlighting the broader vision behind such projects, PM Modi spoke about the government’s focus on infrastructure development. “Till now, more than 2.5 crore people have travelled to Namo Bharat. Our government is investing heavily in the modern infrastructure of 'Viksit Bharat'. In the last 11 years, the infrastructure budget has increased by more than 6 times. In these years, ₹17 lakh crore have been spent on highways and expressways. More than 1 lakh kms of highways have been constructed,” he said.
He reiterated that citizen convenience remains a top priority: “Today, the priority of our government is the convenience of the citizens of the country... Modern rail services like Metro and Vande Bharat are being expanded with the same intention.”
In his address, the Prime Minister also took an indirect swipe at opposition parties, referring to past hesitations around development in Noida. He remarked that earlier governments avoided visiting the region due to superstition and political fears, contrasting it with the present vision of transforming it into a global gateway.
Calling the airport a symbol of aspiration and progress, PM Modi said, “From here, aircrafts will fly around the world, and along with this, it will also become the symbol of the flight of developed Uttar Pradesh.”
A New Aviation Hub for North India
With its massive scale, strategic location, and future expansion plans, the Noida International Airport is poised to become one of India’s most important aviation hubs. Beyond easing congestion, it is expected to reshape regional development, attract investments, and position Uttar Pradesh as a key player in India’s growth story. As PM Modi summed it up during the ceremony: “This is your future.”
