Sourav Ganguly’s ₹2,500 Crore Steel Plant in Bengal to be Operational in 18-20 Months
Former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly has announced that his steel plant project in partnership with Captain Steel, TMT bar manufacturer, is set to become operational within the next 18 to 20 months. The greenfield steel project, located in Garbeta, West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district, involves an investment of ₹2,500 crore to establish a manufacturing facility with a production capacity of 0.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
At an event, Ganguly addressed the expectations surrounding the project, stating that while many assume a plant of this scale can be completed within a short period, the process takes time due to multiple regulatory approvals. These include environmental, pollution control, and government clearances. He emphasized that operations are expected to commence within 18 to 20 months once all necessary approvals and construction activities are completed.
Initially, the project was planned for Salboni, a location known for its industrial potential. However, after facing challenges, including issues related to land acquisition, the project was relocated to Garbeta, approximately 26 kilometers from Salboni. Ganguly’s joint venture partner confirmed that the company has secured land at the new location, and the necessary acquisition processes are in progress.
Captain Steel currently operates two plants with a combined production capacity of 5 lakh tonnes per annum. With the addition of the new facility, the company’s total production capacity will increase to 1.3 million tonnes per annum. The steel plant will require approximately 350 acres of land. While the acquisition process is ongoing, officials involved in the project have indicated that they are making progress in obtaining the necessary land and regulatory approvals.
The steel plant is expected to contribute significantly to the industrial growth of the region by generating employment opportunities and strengthening the state’s manufacturing sector. The West Bengal government has been encouraging industrial investments, and this project aligns with the state’s focus on attracting large-scale manufacturing ventures. The project was first publicly announced by Ganguly during West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit to Spain in 2023. More recently, at the 2025 Global Investment Summit, Banerjee acknowledged Ganguly’s growing involvement in industrial ventures, noting that his transition from cricket administration to the business sector marks a significant development.
Ganguly’s stake in the project has been described as substantial, though officials have not disclosed specific details regarding his financial involvement. The partnership with Captain Steel indicates a strategic approach to leveraging existing industry expertise while expanding operations in a high-demand sector.
