PM Modi Inaugurates Major Development Projects Worth ₹5,500 Crore in Prayagraj
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated multiple development projects worth ₹5,500 crore in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, during an event on Friday. These projects are aimed at enhancing connectivity, promoting spiritual tourism, and preparing the region for the Mahakumbh 2025. The initiatives are expected to significantly improve the region’s infrastructure and create opportunities for local communities.
Swachh and Nirmal Ganga Project
In line with the government’s commitment to clean rivers, the Swachh and Nirmal Ganga Project includes measures to intercept, divert, and treat minor drains flowing into the Ganga. This initiative aims to ensure zero discharge of untreated water into the river. The project also includes upgrades to the city’s drinking water and electricity infrastructure, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
Development of Major Temple Corridors
The government is investing in the development of temple corridors to enhance spiritual tourism in the region. Key corridors under this initiative include the Bharadwaj Ashram Corridor, Shringverpur Dham Corridor, Akshayvat Corridor, and Hanuman Mandir Corridor. These projects aim to improve accessibility for devotees and attract more pilgrims to Prayagraj, further boosting the local economy.
Focus on Spiritual Tourism
To support the influx of pilgrims during the Mahakumbh 2025, the government has launched several initiatives aimed at improving the overall experience for visitors. One such project is the introduction of the “Kumbh Sahayak” chatbot, an AI-based tool designed to assist pilgrims in 11 Indian languages. This chatbot will provide information about routes, facilities, and schedules, making it easier for visitors to navigate the event.
The development of the Hanuman Corridor and Akshayvat Corridor has also been prioritized, along with plans to redevelop the Saraswati Koop, an ancient site of religious significance. These efforts are expected to position Prayagraj as a prominent hub for spiritual tourism.
Preparations for Mahakumbh 2025
Preparations for the Mahakumbh 2025 include large-scale initiatives to accommodate the millions of pilgrims expected to visit the event. A temporary city will be established on the banks of the Sangam, housing visitors for approximately 1.5 months. To maintain cleanliness, over 15,000 sanitation workers will be deployed. The event is also expected to generate employment for retailers, boatmen, and individuals involved in organizing religious ceremonies.
Rail and Road Infrastructure Enhancements
A major focus of the development is on improving rail and road connectivity in Prayagraj. The projects include the construction of 10 new Road Over Bridges (RoBs) and flyovers to address traffic congestion and improve transportation efficiency. Additionally, permanent ghats and riverfront roads are being developed to strengthen the city’s infrastructure and provide better access to key locations.
Significance of the Projects
These projects demonstrate the government's focus on developing Prayagraj as a center for spiritual tourism while addressing infrastructure needs. The initiatives are planned to improve connectivity, create jobs, and support residents. By focusing on river cleaning, transportation, and modern facilities, these efforts are intended to have a long-term impact on the region.
As preparations for Mahakumbh 2025 continue, these developments aim to help transform Prayagraj into a destination that combines its spiritual heritage with improved infrastructure.
