The Bihar government has announced that approximately 1.04 crore (10.4 million) eligible families across the state will benefit from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) one of India’s flagship housing schemes aimed at providing affordable, permanent homes to economically weaker sections and disadvantaged groups. The announcement was made by a senior government minister, highlighting the state’s continued commitment to the national goal of “Housing for All.”

Under the scheme, both the PMAY-Gramin (rural) and PMAY-Urban (urban) components work to construct pucca houses equipped with basic amenities such as toilets, water supply, and electricity connections for eligible beneficiaries across rural and urban areas. PMAY-Gramin focuses on rural households, while PMAY-Urban caters to the needs of urban poor, with different implementation strategies and support levels.

According to government data and recent implementation trends:

  • Thousands of houses have already been completed and handed over to beneficiaries in Bihar over the past decade, with over 39 lakh poor families receiving permanent homes so far under PMAY-Gramin as part of long-term poverty alleviation efforts.

  • In 2025, more than 1.5 lakh homes were completed under the urban component of the scheme, and many more units continue to be sanctioned and constructed across the state’s municipalities.

  • Earlier phases of the scheme extended financial support directly into beneficiaries’ accounts, including first installments distributed to tens of thousands of rural households with more funds earmarked for ongoing construction and completion.

Financial assistance under PMAY typically includes a significant subsidy component especially for the construction of permanent houses with beneficiaries in rural areas eligible for central and state contributions. In some iterations of the scheme, additional incentives such as free or subsidised electricity connections and supplementary subsidies have also been introduced to enhance living standards.

Officials say construction and progress monitoring remain key priorities, with efforts to accelerate releases of funds and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive support without delays. While reports indicate that some delays in financial processes could slow down portions of construction, authorities are actively coordinating between departments to keep housing projects on schedule.

Bihar’s housing push is part of a wider national effort to ensure safe, dignified shelter for millions of families by 2030, aligning with broader development goals and rural upliftment
