AMBALA – In a landmark decision for the urban development of Haryana, the state government has officially initiated the process to transform Ambala Cantonment into a sprawling metropolitan city. Haryana’s Minister for Energy, Transport and Labour, Anil Vij, announced that the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) has commenced the development of seven new sectors, a project that is set to redefine the region’s economic and residential landscape.

The move follows an approval from Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, signaling a coordinated effort to modernize the state’s key transit and industrial nodes.

Project Blueprint: Seven Sectors Across 1,000 Acres

The expansion is not just an incremental growth but a massive 1,000-acre master-planned project designed to integrate with the city's upcoming Ring Road. The newly proposed sectors include:

  • Sector 27 and 28

  • Sector 36

  • Sector 40 and 40-A

  • Sector 41-A and 42

These sectors will be developed across the lands of several adjoining villages, including Ghasitpur, Buhawa, Shahpur, Brahman Majra, Kardhan, Sarsehri, Chandpura, Machhonda, Ugada, Dukheri, Salarheri, Ranwala, Manglei and Sambhalkha.

A Minister’s Vision for a "Modern Metropolis"

Minister Anil Vij, who has been the primary advocate for this expansion, highlighted that the project is a response to the rapid urbanization triggered by the construction of the Ambala Ring Road. Expressing his vision for a future-ready city, Vij stated:

"Ambala Cantonment is expanding up to the Ring Road and it is our responsibility to ensure this growth is planned and modern. By developing these seven new sectors, we are creating a world-class metropolitan ecosystem. This marks a major step toward the expansion and modernization of our city, providing residents with high-quality living spaces and robust commercial opportunities."

Infrastructure and Strategic Connectivity

The "Metropolis" plan is supported by a significant infrastructure push designed to handle the load of a growing urban center:

  • Power & Utilities: A ₹38 billion project has been launched to strengthen the power distribution network, including seven new feeders and a new substation near Shahpur–Machhaunda to ensure stable electricity for the expanded zones.

  • E-Bhoomi Portal Integration: To ensure transparency, the government has opened the E-Bhoomi portal for land applications. Landowners and farmers can voluntarily offer their land for sector development until April 30, 2026.

  • Industrial Synergy: The expansion aligns with the planned Saha Industrial Area and Logistic Park, which will span 2,600 acres. Coupled with a proposed Railways freight terminal, Ambala is positioned to become a logistical powerhouse in North India.

Cultural and Educational Landmarks

Beyond housing and industry, the city is seeing the rise of iconic public institutions. The Aryabhatta Regional Science Centre, currently under construction on five acres at GT Road with a budget of ₹36 crore, is expected to be the finest of its kind in North India. This center will feature live weather displays and a virtual science gallery, serving as a major draw for students and tourists alike.

Economic Outlook and Real Estate Impact

Real estate analysts suggest that the inclusion of residential, commercial and industrial zones within these seven sectors will create a balanced urban environment. The move is expected to bridge the gap between rural peripheries and the urban core, potentially creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs in construction, services and the logistics sector.

As Ambala prepares to shed its image as a traditional railway town, this metropolitan shift sets a new benchmark for urban planning in Haryana, blending historic identity with 21st-century infrastructure.
