Nashik Municipal Corporation Prepares for Kumbh 2027: Major Infrastructure Projects to Begin in April
With two years remaining for the 2027 Kumbh Mela in Nashik, the city's Municipal Corporation is set to begin major infrastructure projects from April. These projects, which are expected to take two years to complete, are part of a comprehensive plan estimated at Rs 7,500 crore. The plan has been submitted to the state government for approval. The civic body aims to ensure that all necessary infrastructure is in place before the religious gathering, which attracts millions of devotees from across the country.
The proposal includes the construction of bridges, sewage treatment plants (STPs), and land acquisition for Sadhugram, a designated area for pilgrims and sadhus during the event. The plan involves the construction of nine bridges, with five spanning the Godavari River and four on its tributaries. The NMC will initiate the tender process for two key bridges on the Godavari River. One bridge will run parallel to the existing structure near Laxminarayan Temple, while the other will be adjacent to the current bridge at Ramwadi. These bridges will help manage the increased traffic flow and ensure smooth movement of people during the event.
To support these projects, the municipal commissioner has allocated Rs 46 crore in the civic body’s 2025-26 budget for the construction of the two bridges. In total, the NMC has made a financial provision of Rs 400 crore as part of its 25% contribution to the overall budget for the Kumbh Mela infrastructure. The financial provision has been spread across the current and next fiscal year budgets to facilitate phased execution of the works.
In addition to the bridges, the NMC plans to acquire over 250 acres of land for Sadhugram. This area will be used for temporary settlements, providing necessary amenities for pilgrims, including sanitation facilities, water supply, and temporary shelters. The acquisition process is expected to commence soon to ensure adequate space is prepared for the massive influx of visitors.
Another crucial aspect of the plan is the construction of two STPs at Makhmalabad and Kamatwada. These plants will play an essential role in managing wastewater generated during the event, helping maintain hygiene and preventing environmental contamination. Given that these projects will take more than two years to complete, their construction is expected to begin immediately to meet the deadlines set by the civic body.
Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri stated that the NMC aims to commence major infrastructure works related to the Kumbh Mela from April. She emphasized that the proposal for immediate execution of these works will be submitted for approval to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in an upcoming Kumbh Mela meeting in Mumbai. The meeting is expected to review the progress of preparations and finalize approvals for various infrastructure projects to ensure smooth execution.
The estimated budget of Rs 7,500 crore comprises contributions from the state government, the central government, and the NMC. While the NMC has allocated Rs 400 crore, additional funds are anticipated from the state and central governments to support the extensive infrastructural development required for the Kumbh Mela. Proper financial planning and phased fund disbursement will be critical to keeping the projects on schedule and preventing delays.
These infrastructure projects are being developed to cater to the anticipated large crowds during the Kumbh Mela. The construction of new roads and bridges will facilitate better movement within Nashik, while the development of STPs will ensure a clean and hygienic environment. Land acquisition for Sadhugram will help accommodate thousands of sadhus and pilgrims, reducing congestion in other parts of the city and ensuring organized arrangements for their stay.
By initiating work in April, the NMC aims to complete critical projects well in advance of the 2027 Kumbh Mela. This proactive approach will ensure that essential infrastructure, including transportation, sanitation, and accommodation facilities, is in place before the arrival of devotees. The civic body’s efforts are focused on managing the event efficiently, reducing logistical challenges, and creating a well-structured environment for pilgrims and tourists alike.
