Dharavi Redevelopment Survey Nears Completion with 63,000+ Tenements Covered

The Dharavi redevelopment survey has reached its final phase, with more than 63,000 tenements already surveyed, according to a statement issued by Navbharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL) on March 25. NMDPL is a joint venture between the Government of Maharashtra and the Adani Group.

The project CEO, SVR Srinivas, stated that the survey has progressed significantly and that the data indicate support from Dharavi residents. He emphasized that the redevelopment effort is not limited to ground-floor tenements but also includes upper-floor structures, existing SRA buildings, slum dwellers on RLDA land, and all religious structures.

According to the statement, lane reconnaissance has been completed for over 95,000 tenements, and more than 89,000 tenements have been numbered. The door-to-door survey has covered more than 63,000 tenements, urging remaining residents to participate. The survey process is expected to ensure that no resident is left out of the redevelopment scheme.

Srinivas highlighted the importance of resident participation and encouraged those who have missed the survey to complete it at the earliest. He mentioned that tenements whose occupants refuse to participate or fail to provide the required documents despite repeated requests may not be revisited.

An NMDPL spokesperson stated that the survey has received a positive response from Dharavi residents, who see redevelopment as an opportunity for a better standard of living. The spokesperson reiterated the importance of cooperation in completing the process smoothly and efficiently.

On February 27, Mr. Srinivas announced that the master plan for the Dharavi redevelopment project is expected to be ready within a month. He estimated the total investment for the redevelopment and rehabilitation project to be approximately ₹3 lakh crore. The completion of the survey is a critical step in finalizing the master plan and moving forward with the next stages of the redevelopment process.

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), now known as Navbharat Mega Developers Private Limited (NMDPL), is leading the redevelopment initiative. The project is regarded as one of the largest urban rejuvenation efforts globally and is considered a significant step toward making Mumbai slum-free.

For nearly 17 years, successive governments have attempted to redevelop Dharavi but faced challenges in implementation. In November 2022, the Adani Group emerged as the winning bidder for the project, committing an initial investment of ₹5,069 crore to commence the transformation.

With the survey entering its final phase, the focus will shift to the implementation of the redevelopment master plan. The project aims to provide formal housing, infrastructure upgrades, and improved amenities for Dharavi residents. Government agencies and NMDPL are working to ensure that all eligible residents are included in the redevelopment scheme and receive housing benefits.

Srinivas has reiterated that the redevelopment will prioritize the interests of Dharavi residents, ensuring they receive adequate housing and amenities in the new development. He urged remaining residents to cooperate with the survey teams to avoid exclusion from the process.

The Dharavi redevelopment project is expected to reshape the area by providing modern infrastructure, improved sanitation, and better living conditions. As the survey nears completion, authorities will begin preparing for the next phases of planning and construction, marking a crucial step in transforming one of Mumbai’s most densely populated areas.
