Charkop Shwetambara Self-Redevelopment Project Kicks Off, Piyush Goyal Announces Expansion to 1,500 Societies

The Charkop Shwetambara Self-Redevelopment Project was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai, marking a major step towards resident-led housing solutions. Supported by the Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank, this project aims to provide stable housing without dependence on builders.Self-redevelopment is gaining traction as a way to empower residents, allowing them to take charge of their housing projects while eliminating concerns related to builder delays and financial mismanagement. The initiative is expected to provide relief to thousands of residents who have struggled with redevelopment challenges in the past.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, addressing the gathering, emphasized the importance of self-redevelopment in reshaping Mumbai’s housing landscape. He stated that 15 societies in North Mumbai had already completed redevelopment under this model and that 1,500 more societies were set to follow.

The central government, he said, has shown strong support for self-redevelopment, recognizing it as a solution to the long-standing issues of stalled redevelopment projects and builder-led delays. Union Minister Piyush Goyal urged residents to take an active role in shaping their housing future, assuring them that the central government would continue to support such initiatives through policy measures and financial backing.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal also highlighted Maharashtra’s ongoing infrastructure development and praised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for his contributions to urban growth. He reaffirmed the Mahayuti government’s commitment to accelerating redevelopment projects and strengthening the state’s housing sector. The government’s broader vision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s "Housing for All" mission, which aims to provide affordable and sustainable housing solutions across India. Among the key upcoming projects in North Mumbai, Union Minister Piyush Goyal announced that a 1,000-bed hospital is under construction in Magathane, while another 1,000-bed hospital will be built in Charkop, Kandivali (West). He also mentioned the Coastal Road Project from Versova to Bhayander, which is expected to commence soon after receiving final environmental clearances. This project aims to enhance connectivity and reduce travel time in the region.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described self-redevelopment as a significant achievement for Mumbai’s Marathi-speaking residents, many of whom have been affected by high property prices and redevelopment delays. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that for the first time, residents could secure a 1,100 sq. ft. flat through self-redevelopment, ensuring they remain in Mumbai rather than being displaced due to rising housing costs. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called on more housing societies to adopt the self-redevelopment model, emphasizing that this approach not only provides better housing options but also helps in maintaining community structures.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also warned against malpractices in self-redevelopment projects. He made it clear that any individual or official involved in irregularities would face strict consequences. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis further encouraged societies to opt for cluster-based self-redevelopment, which would allow for better urban planning and infrastructure integration. This approach would help in creating organized residential clusters with improved amenities and services, reducing the impact of unplanned growth.

The event was attended by several prominent political leaders, including Pravin Darekar, Leader of the Legislative Council, MLA Yogesh Sagar, MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar, MLA Prakash Surve, and MLA Chitra Wagh. Former MP Gopal Shetty and Former MLA Vijay Girkar were also present. Their participation reflected the widespread political support for self-redevelopment and its potential impact on Mumbai’s housing sector.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal assured Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that Mahayuti would secure over 38 municipal corporators from North Mumbai in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Union Minister Piyush Goyal expressed confidence that the Triple Engine government—comprising the central, state, and municipal administrations—would accelerate redevelopment projects and ensure better governance in Mumbai.

The Charkop Shwetambara Self-Redevelopment Project serves as an example of how resident-led initiatives can transform the housing sector. With 1,500 more societies expected to follow, this model is set to redefine the real estate landscape in Mumbai. The Mahayuti government’s focus on self-redevelopment, infrastructure expansion, and policy-driven support is likely to encourage more housing societies to take charge of their own redevelopment projects.
