10 Lakh Rooftop Solar Installations Completed Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana
India’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) has achieved a key milestone, with 10.09 lakh rooftop solar installations completed as of March 10, 2025. The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, aims to provide free electricity to one crore residential households by promoting solar energy adoption. By reducing dependence on conventional power sources, the initiative supports self-reliance in energy production and contributes to lower carbon emissions.
Implemented by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the scheme has received 47.3 lakh applications. So far, 6.13 lakh beneficiaries have been granted subsidies amounting to ₹4,770 crore. The application and subsidy process is managed through the official portal www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in, ensuring direct bank transfers within 15 days.
To make rooftop solar installations more accessible, the scheme offers subsidies of up to ₹78,000. Additionally, 12 Public Sector Banks (PSBs) provide collateral-free loans at a subsidized interest rate of 6.75% for amounts up to ₹2 lakh. This financial assistance reduces the upfront cost of installing solar panels, making it feasible for more households.
For example, a 3 KW solar system requires an initial investment of ₹15,000, with potential financial benefits of up to ₹15 lakh over 25 years. The loan process is entirely digital, streamlining access to credit for applicants. As of March 2025, 3.10 lakh loan applications have been submitted, with 1.58 lakh loans sanctioned and 1.28 lakh disbursed.
Several states have shown significant progress in adopting the scheme. Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have met 100% of their rooftop solar targets for government buildings, setting an example for clean energy integration. Other states, including Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, have contributed significantly to the overall installation numbers.
The government is monitoring the implementation process closely to ensure timely execution and progress toward the goal of one crore solar-powered households by 2026-27.
With a total budget of ₹75,021 crore, the scheme is a major initiative for India’s renewable energy sector. The government is also working on improving financing mechanisms for solar installations. In a recent national workshop in Mumbai, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi discussed strategies with leading bankers to unlock more funding. The discussions focused on risk-sharing mechanisms, climate funds, and public-private partnerships to accelerate solar adoption.
Beyond residential installations, the scheme is being extended to government buildings to reduce operational costs and encourage wider adoption in commercial and industrial sectors. The initiative also supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision by prioritizing domestic manufacturing. Only India-made solar modules and components are approved under the scheme, strengthening local production capabilities.
As of March 2025, over 3 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been installed. The government aims to reach 27 GW by March 2027, reinforcing India's transition toward renewable energy.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana continues to expand its reach, bringing more households into the solar energy network. By offering direct subsidies, easy financing, and a streamlined digital application process, the scheme is making rooftop solar more accessible.
